Class Description:

Celebrate your grad with a personalized tumbler using Silhouette Studio and the fonts on your computer! Join Kelly as she shares expert tips and tricks for customizing your design to make your graduate feel special. Choose 1-2 colors of permanent adhesive vinyl in their school colors to bring your creation to life. In class, Kelly will demonstrate using the Silhouette Cameo 5, but these techniques and the project can be done with any Silhouette machine. Plus, you’ll gain skills that can be used for future custom vinyl projects!

Class Supplies:

• Tumbler, 40 oz. (can be any size tumbler with straight sides)
• Silhouette Cameo 5 (or any Silhouette cutter)
• 1-2 colors permanent adhesive vinyl (in school colors)
• Transfer tape
• Weeding tool
• Vinyl scraper tool
• Ruler
• Scissors or paper trimmer
• Fonts on your computer (in the class I’ll use Design ID #253507 “Stars and Stripes” and #1251209 “Mustard”)
• Silhouette Studio Software installed on your computer

Instructions:

Software:

1. Draw box as guide for usable space on tumbler (measure) [4”x5”]
2. Text tool – type 2025
3. Move into box and resize larger (fill only 4” of box to leave room for name)
4. Text-edit mode: drag bar left to split 20/25 onto two lines
5. Fill font with colors (black fill, no outline)
6. Font Panel:

• • Reduce line spacing
  • Choose font (I used Stars & Stripes)
  • Continue to adjust spacing, size, etc. to fill 4” of drawn box (leave room for name)
  • 180 pt, Line spacing 55 %
  • Add new text – type “class of”

7. Fill with gold color, no outline
8. Experiment with bold script fonts (I used Mustard)
9. Resize larger, but don’t overpower numbers (105 pt)
10. New text: (any name)
11. Use same font and color as “class of” but keep small enough to fit in box
12. Adjust all to fit inside box
13. Make copy to the side of all text pieces
14. Black numbers – ungroup/regroup to see actual size
15. Gold – weld + group
16. Align all Center
17. Select “class of” and create offset (0.030 in.)
18. While Offset is selected, open MODIFY Panel
19. Shift to add black numbers to selection – choose Subtract
20. Group black numbers
21. Place only pieces you want to cut on virtual mat (adjust Page Setup Panel for no mat)

SEND Panel:

1. Material = Vinyl, Glossy
2. Automatic Cross Cut (check “enabled” if want to use – personal preference)
3. Test Cut
4. My settings: (Glossy = Blade 2/Force 10/Speed 5; Glitter = 4/14/5 x2 passes; Textured gold = 2/12/10)

Assembly:

1. Weed
2. 2 types of transfer tape, if using Silhouette Glitter vinyl
3. Apply black first
4. Use offset/cutout as guide to place gold next
5. Add name or other details like high school name, etc.

Not that I needed another crafty hobby, but this summer I started experimenting with needle felting. These are a set of needle felted animals I made over the Christmas holiday break, and I want to share the finished results with you!

My husband bought me this set on Amazon, and I tried to make them cuter than the originals. (I think eye placement makes a big difference.) My kids named each of these little animals as I created them.

In case you don’t know, needle felting is a process of sculpting with wool fibers by stabbing the wool roving over and over with a barbed felting needle to compact and shape the wool. You can purchase a kit that includes everything you need to get started like this set of animals or this set of succulents. You can also get high-quality needle felting tools from Lia Griffith’s shop, Felt Paper Scissors.

It is not a fast process, unfortunately, so it’s not going to become my prime hobby. If I’m going to spend hours and hours on a project by choice, it will usually be crepe paper flowers. But I did enjoy making these needle felted animals and look forward to coming up with my own creations and not solely rely on a kit.

I have been working on another kit with needle felted succulents, but I’ll save that for another post.

There you have it! Lots of fun crepe paper projects I packed into a short amount of time. I used my Silhouette Cameo 5 and Silhouette Cameo Pro MK-II for as many of these elements as I could. I think the only things I cut by hand (besides simple strips for centers) were the anemone leaves. I love my Lia Griffith membership and my Silhouette machines together! So much joy and creativity to make my heart happy.

I recently made this crepe paper zinnia wildflower arrangement and want to share it with you! I entered it in our local 4th of July quilt & art show (mostly quilts) and won second place in the art competition based on attendee votes.

Here are a few detail shots. I’ll post my “recipe” and supplies at the end of the post.

I started with zinnias from a Lia Griffith zinnia template using the blush color and red centers, but I just kept making more and more zinnias. I went by photos I had taken in my zinnia garden mix last summer. These white/green zinnias turned out to be some of my favorites. The arrangement includes zinnias in blush pink, bright purple, orange, bright pink, and white.

For line elements, I used yellow wild poppies (another Lia Griffith template) and created these Mexican hat flowers on my own using my wildflowers outside as an example. I hope to share a tutorial or class for these Mexican hat flowers. I was a little obsessed with them in my wildflower patch and spent several hours re-creating them on a day I was supposed to be working! But they turned out to be the perfect fit in this arrangement, so it was time well spent.

I needed some quick greenery besides the zinnia leaves, so I put together these basil stems from Lia Griffith. Her template was perfect, but I used different crepe paper and PanPastel color.

I cut some of the leaves and petals for this arrangement by hand, but I cut most of the zinnia petals and leaves with my Silhouette Cameo 5. Check out my Lia Griffith Silhouette cutting machine course here.

Here’s a breakdown of the colors of crepe paper and shading media I used.
