Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey (D) grew emotional during a virtual meeting where she discussed turning a recreation center in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood into a housing facility for illegal immigrants. The Melnea A. Cass Recreational Complex is a popular indoor arena for year-round fun for the whole family, but that fun is being put on pause. Healey confirmed the administration’s plan to convert the recreation center into an overflow site for illegal immigrants currently at Logan International Airport.
Roxbury, known as the “heart of Black culture in Boston,” will see the change from a recreation center to housing for 125 illegal immigrant families. Roxbury residents were given less than 48 hours notice about the conversion, which has left them outraged.
Healey fought back tears when speaking about the move, expressing her commitment to it. However, people are criticizing the decision, asking why the governor is choosing illegal immigrants over children.
The decision has led to protests in the neighborhood, with the National Guard called in to combat the illegal immigrant crisis.
Now, Roxbury residents and children will have to find other activities until at least May.
