Republicans Break Rank to Thwart Impeachment of DHS Secretary Mayorkas

Critics of President Joe Biden thought this would be the easiest of all efforts to hold somebody in the administration accountable – an effort to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for facilitating the worst border crisis this nation has ever seen.

Instead, a measure put forth by Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) to do just that failed, and it includes the usual caveat: X number of Republicans joined Democrats to kill the effort.

In this scenario, X = 8, thanks to Reps. Patrick McHenry (R-NC), Ken Buck (R-CO), Darrell Issa (R-CA), Cliff Bentz (R-OR), Tom McClintock (R-CA), Virginia Foxx (R-NC), John Duarte (R-CA), and Mike Turner (R-OH).

The resolution accused Mayorkas of “fail(ing) to maintain operational control of the border, thereby violating the Secure Fence Act of 2006,” and suggested that he and his department had engaged in “willful admittance of border crossers, terrorists, human traffickers, drugs and other contraband.”

All of this is demonstrably true, according to Greene. And yet, in typical fashion, a handful of GOP members turned into the G-O-Flee, and a final count of 209-201, sent the resolution back to the Homeland Security Committee, effectively killing it.

Anger At Eight Republicans Who Couldn’t Muster Courage To Impeach Mayorkas

According to Fox News reporter Bill Melugin, who has extensively documented activity at the wide open southern border for years, some GOP sources are livid that the eight aforementioned Republicans couldn’t get on board with an effort to impeach Mayorkas.

Even the DHS Secretary himself has admitted that over 600,000 illegal “gotaways” have evaded law enforcement and escaped into the country this fiscal year.

Melugin reports on one source who was particularly furious at the Republican lawmakers that sided with Democrats to ensure Mayorkas would not be held accountable.

“Impeachment of Mayorkas is literally the lowest hanging fruit and we are fucking it up,” they allegedly texted to the Fox News reporter. “Some of these people want to have endless hearings and do nothing. I can’t see how [we] can’t deliver one damn win.”

The media and feckless Republicans argued repeatedly last week that they keep losing at the ballot box because of the former President Donald Trump’s influence or a backlash to pro-life policies.

But this is the real reason the GOP loses. Their voters believe that time and again, they will side with Democrats no matter the scenario.

DHS Celebrates – Greene Blasts Her Republican Colleagues

“While the House Majority has wasted months trying to score points with baseless attacks, Secretary Mayorkas has been doing his job and working to keep Americans safe,” a DHS spokesperson said in a statement.

That effort includes, as reported by The Political Insider earlier this month, an African illegal immigrant wanted in Senegal for alleged “terroristic activities” who was unwittingly released by Border Patrol officials in Arizona for weeks before being arrested in New York City.

The Biden administration has overseen the arrests of 172 individuals on the terror watchlist at ports of entry so far this fiscal year and has allowed upwards of 2 million “gotaways” to vanish into the country since the President took office.

Also reported here at The Political Insider in late August is the fact that the FBI struggled to “identify and assess” more than a dozen illegal immigrants after they crossed the southern border with the aid of a smuggler that has ties to the terrorist group ISIS.

This is not “working to keep Americans safe.”

And yet, the GOP, like a lion in the land of Oz, couldn’t find the courage to impeach Mayorkas.

Greene tore into her Republican colleagues for helping Democrats shield Mayorkas from accountability.

“What are these Republicans even worth?” she asked, according to an X post by Fox News correspondent Chad Pergram.

“But all we hear about is send money to Ukraine, send money to this. And people want Mayorkas impeached. They want accountability,” she reportedly said. “And I can’t believe it.”

Republicans have left their voters dismayed regarding several efforts in which they sided with Democrats even as they hold the majority in the House. There have been no impeachments of the President, Mayorkas, or January 6th prosecutors, just to name a few.

Republicans didn’t help curb inflation, they helped facilitate it with the Biden-McCarthy debt ceiling bill.

They promised no more “blank checks” to Ukraine, but taxpayer money has continued to flow to that country unabated.

“They stood with the Democrats to protect Secretary Mayorkas and prevent his impeachment by, putting it back in the Judiciary Committee, where they can put articles of impeachment up on the shelf to collect more dust,” Greene fumed.

That’s the bottom line: Republicans promise their voters the world and then deliver hearings that ultimately fizzle out as they hope beyond hope that their base will forget or forgive the failures.

Democrats, by contrast, deliver red meat to their voters with multiple impeachments and prosecutions of their political adversaries.
