Republicans Defeat Impeachment of DHS Secretary Mayorkas: Failure Theater Continues

Ken Buck’s decision to vote against impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is a major disappointment for Republicans. Mayorkas has been widely criticized for facilitating the worst border crisis in U.S. history, resulting in record-high border crossings. Buck’s vote, along with those of three other Republicans, has drawn widespread criticism for going against the wishes of the American people, who largely support the effort to impeach Mayorkas. Former President Donald Trump has accused Buck of being a weak and ineffective Republican selling out his principles, while others have referred to the Republicans who voted against impeachment as cowards. Despite the failed impeachment vote, House Republicans have indicated their plans to bring the Articles of Impeachment against Mayorkas back to the floor, with the hope of achieving a different outcome.
