Senator Durbin’s Proposal: Allowing Undocumented Immigrants to Serve in the Military

Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), in a speech on the Senate floor, proposed allowing illegal immigrants to serve in the United States military, stating that the military recruitment numbers are kept down and they are unable to reach their quotas each month. Durbin also wants to grant amnesty for so-called “Dreamers,” individuals brought to the United States unlawfully as children. Durbin is also positive about creating additional lawful pathways for immigrants to work in the United States. Senator Durbin also renewed calls for amnesty for so-called “DREAMers.” Durbin is a known advocate for the “Dreamers,” as he joined Republican Senator Lindsey Graham in 2021 in introducing legislation that would potentially provide permanent residency and eventual citizenship to Dreamers. Conversely, Trump, as a candidate for President in 2016, hinted at the idea of having illegal immigrants serve in the military. Fortuitously, Trump is the only candidate who mentioned it. On the other hand, the organization is also concerned with legal immigrants invading the country and being recruited to “protect” it.
