The Political Insider reports that ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith defended Fulton County, Georgia, District Attorney Fani Willis against accusations made by Newsweek writer Kira Davis. The accusations implied that Willis only had her position due to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) mandates. Smith described these accusations as “utterly ridiculous” and claimed that Willis was qualified for her position. He was critical of Davis’ characterization of Willis and felt that it was based on racism. Smith’s defense of Willis signals that at least one ESPN host disagrees with the charge that diversity played a role in her appointment.
