Craft Along: Cosmos Paper Flower

In this free Silhouette Craft Along Class, I’ll teach you how to make a cosmos paper flower from cardstock. I try to teach something a little different with each paper flower, and this one will use a couple of new coloring techniques, plus some shaping techniques to make this flower look pretty realistic.

We just planted a lot of cosmos seedlings into our flower garden, so I was really in the mood to make this flower in paper! In the class I show how to make a classic cosmos flower — pink, with a pop of magenta in the center. However, this flower comes in multiple shades of pink, including dark pink and white. You can make quite a few different varieties, and people will know it’s cosmos! These are such cheerful flowers, and the individual stems make great gifts for friends.

Instructions:

Software –

  1. Open Cosmos #330958 in Silhouette Studio
  2. Delete decorative box
  3. Arrange and recolor flower pieces
  4. Cut 1 or more flowers from pink cardstock
  5. Cut 1 green calyx and 3 leaves per flower
  6. Cut 4 yellow stamen per flower
  7. TEST CUT for good cuts (I prefer Blade 3-4, Force 30, Speed 5) — use a sharp blade and sticky mat for best results with detailed cuts on cardstock

Assembly –

  1. Brush on magenta PanPastel to center of pink flower (paper towel under) – one side only
  2. Manually draw score lines with back of spatula tool onto flower petals (soft surface under)
  3. Draw with black alcohol ink marker in center of all four yellow stamen (both sides on only one)
  4. Spritz each yellow center with water and crumple tightly
  5. Slide yellow stamen onto 18 gauge green floral wire (bend tip in loop to increase surface area) and hot glue each piece to tip of wire, one at a time. Place the yellow stamen colored with black on both sides, last.
  6. Gently bend flower petals upward along score lines
  7. Slide flower up wire and glue to yellow center stamen
  8. Use spatula tool to bend green calyx tips downward and slide up the wire, then glue to base of flower (tips down away from flower)
  9. Wrap stem with green floral tape and attach three leaves to stem with floral tape
  10. Gently bend wire for realism

Note: The designer has her own video tutorial for this cosmos flower that’s a little different from mine. I put my own spin on it to add color and to simplify some things. If you’d like to see the designer’s original tutorial, you have access to it once you purchase the design by clicking on the “Instructions” button in the Silhouette Design Store when looking at this design #330958.
